The Charlottesville-Albemarle Technical Education Center Foundation (CATEF), Albemarle Rotary Foundation, and Blue Ridge Homebuilders Association (BRHB) awarded 10 scholarships, totaling $12,000, to CATEC students on Monday, May 24.
CATEF awarded $8,000 in scholarships to seven students. The CATEC Foundation awards five Opportunity Scholarships to students to pursue post-secondary education, each receiving $1,000. The CATEF’s Opportunity Fund’s mission is to help individuals by providing life changing opportunities through creative solutions to barriers that would otherwise prevent an individual from bettering themselves in a technical trade.
CATEF oversees two additional scholarships: The Leslie Walton Scholarship and The Lance Van de Castle Scholarship. The Leslie Walton Scholarship awards $1500 for the first year and $500 for the second year of a CATEC student’s post-secondary education. The Lance Van de Castle Scholarship, whose recipient must be a CATEC Building Trades or Electricity student in high school or apprenticeship program who is pursuing post-secondary or additional training in those trade areas, receives a $1,000 scholarship.
The Albemarle Rotary Club Foundation Scholarship awards $2,000 to CATEC students to meet the “financial need of funds by the student in order to continue the student’s education at a university, college, or technical school.” This scholarship also emphasizes community service.
The Blue Ridge Home Builders Association Work Force Development Scholarship awards two $1,000 scholarships to CATEC students. These recipients must be CATEC Building Trades or Electricity students who are pursuing post-secondary or additional training to obtain employment upon graduation in the construction industry. These fields include RVAC, real estate development, construction, electrical, carpentry, engineering, business and/or construction management, design-build, estimating, construction technology, CAD drafting, and construction planning.
