Carpentry

CATEC Carpentry Program hosted girls from Girl Scout Troops 3212 and 964 on Saturday, November 18 in the CATEC Carpentry lab.

Local Girl Scout Troop leaders reached out to CATEC to work with a professional craftsman who also work with young people. The troops were comprised of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade girls who were earning their Woodworker Badge. To earn the badge, girls had to learn to use a hammer, level, screwdriver, and wood saw to build something.

CATEC Carpentry instructor Darrell Morris has prepared a project for the participants where they will build benches out of pine using lumber donated by Better Living Building Supply. Morris says, “Everyone should learn to use these basic hand tools and develop these skills, but I always encourage girls to enroll in a CATEC Construction Trades class. The skilled trades are in high demand and are under-represented by women.”
